THE BATTLE OF VYRNWY 24 MEDI 1400: 'TARIAN GLYNDWR' BATTLEFIELD REGISTRATION CAMPAIGN EVENT AT VYRNWY CENTRE.

.

EMBASSY GLYNDWR CARRIED OUT A  'TARIAN GLYNDWR' BATTLEFIELD REGISTRATION ACTION TO MARK AS NEAR AS POSSIBLE LOCATION OF THE FIRST BATTLE OF FYRNWY WE HAD HOPED TO DO THIS ON the 24 SEPTEMBER BUT THIS WAS NOT TO BE SO. However, I at last was able to place a SIMPLE HAND MADE Registration PLAQUE aS A TEMPORARY MEASURE AT LOCATION AS  NEAR AS POSSIBLE  TO WHERE THIS BATTLE MAY HAVE BEEN FOUGHT. THE LOCATION I HAVE CHOSEN IS AS MUCH SYMBOLIC AND ALSO TO MAKE IT POSSIBLE FOR AS MANY PEOPLE AS POSSIBLE TO SEE THE PLAQUE, THUS FOTOS BELOW WILL SHOW TWO POSSIBLE PLACE FOR THE PLAQUE. BOTH ARE CLOSE TO THE WHERE GLYNDWR WAY MEETS AT ROAD TO LLANWYDDN CLOSE BY THE VYRNWY ESTATE CENTRE. HOPEFULLY, IN TIME THE VYRNWY ESTATE WILL THEMSELVES SET UP A MORE PROFFESSIONALLY FINNISHED BATTLE SITE PLAQUE AND COMMISSION A SCULPTURE TO SYMBOLICALLY REPRESENT THE BATTLE, SUCH WOULD BE A GOOD ADDITION TO THEIR SCULPTURE PARK.

THE BATTLE TOOK PLACE ON THE 24 SEPTEMBER 1400, A DEFEAT OF SORTS FOR THE WELSH BUT THE BEGINNING OF A GREAT STRUGGLE FOR WELSH FREEDOM, OUR LAST GREAT WAR FOR WELSH INDEPENDENCE, A WAR OF NATIONAL LIBERATION THAT WAS TO LAST 21 YEARS. IT BEGAN AT LLYS GLYNDYFRDWY ON 16 MEDI 1400 WHEN OUR NATIONS 'FOUNDING FATHERS' GATHERED TO PLOT REBELLION AND DECLARED OWAIN AP GRUFFYDD FYCHAN 'TYWYSOG CYMRU'. TWO DAYS LATER ON 18 MEDI A SMALL ARMY GATHERED AT CAERDRWERYN AND FROM THERE ROAD OUT INTO HISTORY, ATTACKING RUTHIN AND RAIDING ON THEY ATTACKED A NUMBER OF COLONIAL CASTLE TOWNS IN THE NORTH EAST; DENBIGH, FLINT, HAWARDEN AND HOLT. BY THE 22 SEPTEMBER THE WELSH WERE ATTACKING THE TOWN OF OSWESTRY AIDED BY LOCAL WELSH WHO HAD DECIDED TO JOIN GLYNDWR'S SMALL 'REBEL', FAST RIDING RAIDING PARTY, BY THE 23TH SEPTEMBER GLYNDWR WAS LEADING THE REBEL BAND TO ATTACK POWIS CASTLE AND SACKING WELSHPOOL.

THEY THEN MADE THEIR WAY INTO THE HEARTLAND OF GLYNDWR'S FAMILY LANDS IN AREA OF MATHRAFEL, SITE OF THE ROYAL SEAT OF THE PRINCES OF POWYS/POWYS FADOG. ON TOWARDS THE WEST, TO CAMP ON THE BANKS OF THE AFON ERFYNWY, NO DOUBT WEIGHED DOWN BY PILLAGED GOODS, WEAPONS AND SUPPLIES AND A GROWING ARMY OF NEW RECRUITS AND CAMP FOLLOWERS. HOWEVER, THERE ON THE 24 SEPTEMBER THE WELSH WERE CAUGHT BY A QUICK ON THEIR TRAIL, 'POSSE' LED BY HUGH BURNELL SHERIFF OF SHROPSHIRE WHO CAUGHT UP WITH THE 'WELSH REBELS'. THERE ON THE BANKS OF AFON ERFYNWYA SKIRMISH AND RUNNING BATTLE TOOK PLACE WITH THE WELSH ESCAPING WEST ALONG THE AFON EFYRNWY INTO THE WILDS OF COED PENLLYN AND SAFTY OF THE BERWYN MOUNTAINS. THERE ARE THREE RIVERS LEADING TO THE WEST THAT MIGHT HAVE PROVIDED TRAILS TO FOLLOW, IN THIS AREA THERE ARE MOUNTAINS NAMED Y GADFA AND BRAICH Y OWEN. I WONDER IF THEY ARE LINKED TO THIS UNFOLDING STORY? PERSONALLY, I AM OF THE MIND ALSO THAT THEY MAY HAVE TAKEN A QUICKER ROUTE ALONG WAUN Y GADFA TO BWLCH Y GROES TOWARD BALA AND STRAIGHT ON TO ERYRI? PERHAPS SOME ONE OUT THERE AS SOME LOCAL KNOWLEDGE WHICH MIGHT HELP TRACK GLYNDWR AND HIS FOLLOWERS AFTER THE 'BATTLE OF ERFYNWY'.

.HAVING MADE THEIR WAY INTO THE SAFTY OF ERYRI FOR THE WINTER, OUT OF WHICH GLYNDWR WOULD LEAD A NOW, LARGER ARMY WITH NEW RECRUITS FROM ALL OVER JOINING WHAT WAS TO BECOME BY 1403 A GREAT NATIONAL ARMY OF LIBERATION. THAT RATHER NEAR CATASTROPHE ON THE BANKS OF AFON ERFYNWY iN THE AUTUMN OF1400, AN INCONSPICUOUS BEGINNING, A NEAR TOTAL DEFEAT WOULD GIVE CAUSE FOR A NATIONAL LIBERATION MOVEMENT TO COME INTO EXISTENCE. THUS WOULD BE LAUNCHED WHAT WOULD BECOME AN EMENSE LONG STRUGGLE STRUGGLE FOR WELSH NATIONAL SOVEREIGNTY AND INDEPENDENCE, A FIGHT FOR THE FREEDOM OF WELSH PEOPLE FROM OPPRESSION AND TYRRANY, AS WELL FROM EXPROPRIATION OF THEIR LAND AND THE EXPLOITATION OF IT'S NATIONAL RESOUCES.
